Biography

Bary G. Bigay Mercedes, MD, MSc, IFCAP, is an interventional medical geneticist and molecular biologist, a member of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), and an International Fellow of the College of American Pathologists. He currently serves as Executive Medical Director of the ChromoMED Institute in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is also the editor of Precision Oncology and Molecular Genetics in the Latin American Journal of Genetics and Genomics (RGGL) and a professor and supervisor of master's theses in genomic bioinformatics at the International University of Valencia.

His professional and scientific career lies at the intersection of medical genetics, clinical genomics, molecular biology, rare diseases, reproductive medicine, oncogenetics, neurogenetics, and global health. His work focuses on predictive genomics, applied data analytics, and bioinformatics, with over five years of experience using statistical and computational methods to interpret complex genetic data and apply them in clinical and translational research settings.

At ChromoMED, he leads the institution's clinical, scientific, academic, and administrative strategy, coordinating programs in clinical genetics, medical genomics, reproductive health, bioethics, and public health, with an emphasis on quality, safety, ethics, and social impact. Among his most notable initiatives is directing the first Albinism Clinic in the Dominican Republic, conceived as a pioneering model of comprehensive care, health equity, and a multidisciplinary approach to rare diseases.

His experience also includes roles as Scientific Director of the ChromoMED Institute, clinical analyst of NGS data at BIOGENOME, head of the embryology laboratory at MEDICALNET B, and a fellowship in constitutional cytogenetics at the Dr. José Renán Esquivel Children's Hospital in Panama. This trajectory has allowed him to consolidate a profile that integrates precision medicine, translational research, reproductive genomics, and institutional leadership.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Universidad Central del Este, and has completed advanced training in clinical genomics, precision medicine and genetic counseling, rare diseases, assisted reproductive technology and embryology, reproductive medicine, molecular biology, precision genomic oncology, and classical and molecular cytogenetics at institutions in Spain and France, including the University of Valencia, the University of Alicante–Instituto Bernabéu, the Catholic University of San Antonio, the University of Montpellier, and the Cardenal Herrera University. He is currently a PhD candidate in Medicine and Surgery with a specialization in genetics and is pursuing advanced studies in public health, higher education, and business administration.
